A unique opportunity to explore water management practices in both urban and rural settings awaits participants of the 2024 Water Tours.
The event, scheduled for September 10th, offers a behind-the-scenes look at how communities and farmers are working together to protect Wisconsin's precious water resources.
The tour, a collaborative effort between Professional Dairy Producers, UW Discovery Farms, Wisconsin Counties Association, and Wisconsin Towns Association, will depart from River Hills Park & Ride and include stops at the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) and Roden Echo Valley, a family-owned dairy farm.
"Water is a vital concern, and it requires a dedicated effort to safeguard our natural resources for both current and future needs,” said Shelly Mayer, executive director of PDP and dairy farmer from Slinger, Wis.
At MMSD, participants will witness firsthand the complex process of treating over 640 million gallons of wastewater daily.
The facility's innovative approach to water reclamation, including the production of Milorganite fertilizer, exemplifies the potential for transforming waste into valuable resources.
Roden Echo Valley dairy farm showcases a different facet of water management. The farm's implementation of water conservation, management, and recycling practices, including waterways, buffer strips, and no-till cover crops, demonstrates the commitment of agricultural producers to sustainable practices.
The tour bus will also feature facilitated discussions with water quality experts, researchers, and other stakeholders. This interactive component will provide attendees with the opportunity to engage in dialogue and learn about the latest advancements in water management.
The 2024 Water Tours are open to the public and offer a valuable learning experience for community members, farmers, educators, and elected officials. Pre-registration is required, and space is limited.
