Dane County, Wisconsin has partnered with the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service to establish a Demonstration Farm Network, aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture and protecting local water quality.
The project, supported by a $1 million cooperative agreement, will provide funding and technical assistance to local farmers to conduct on-farm research on innovative conservation systems. The network will consist of several demonstration farms that will serve as learning centers for farmers, agribusinesses, natural resource agencies, and other stakeholders. The farms will also conduct soil health and forage sampling, as well as edge-of-field water quality monitoring in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin.
County Executive Joe Parisi expressed his excitement about the project, emphasizing the importance of clean water and healthy soils to the community. The Dane Demonstration Farms are expected to be established by fall of 2023, and farmers interested in participating are encouraged to contact the Dane County Land & Water Resources Department.
Participation in the network comes with an incentive payment. The project represents a significant step forward in promoting sustainable agriculture and protecting natural resources in Dane County.
