A Sauk County agriculture instructor is being honored with a Herb Kohl Fellowship for his efforts to improve the local community while helping students grow personally and academically. Troy Talford of Sauk Prairie High School is among the 100 teachers in the state chosen for the award this year.
Talford has taught agriculture since 2005 after graduating from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. In 2014, he became a National Agriscience Teacher Ambassador where he facilitated workshops for other instructors throughout the nation. And he was recently named just one of only six individuals nationwide who received the Teacher Mentor Award by the National Association of Agricultural Educators.
"Education is the key to the future of Wisconsin and our nation," said Kohl. "I am very proud of the accomplishments of these students, teachers, and principals and look forward to the great contributions they will make in the future."
Each of the teachers and their schools will receive $3,000 as a part of the recognition. Over 40 agricultural education teachers in the state have earned the honor since its inception.
The fellowship program is co-sponsored by the Wisconsin Newspaper Association, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Wisconsin Council of Religious and Independent Schools, Cooperative Educational Service Agencies, Association of Wisconsin School Administrators, and Herb Kohl Foundation.
