The Sauk Prairie School District and Sauk Prairie FFA Alumni & Supporters are in the process of raising money for a new greenhouse system, which will bare the name of one of its former agriculture instructors. The all new Jeff Hicken Horticultural Learning Center will serve students for years to come by promoting inquiry-based STEM learning through a hands-on, career-focused, and technology-integrated curriculum.
"It has been an emotional ride since Mr. Hicken passed away in June," said Project Fundraising Chair BJ Chrisler, who was a former student of Hicken's. "Many have asked me if there were any plans in Sauk Prairie to celebrate Jeff's lasting impact on our community. It is exciting to finally announce this future space coming in the Summer of 2022."
The facility will be fully ADA accessible, will include 12 growing benches, and have built-in classroom instruction space.
Chrisler says various sponsorship levels are being accepted for the project, which ranges from $100 to $10,000.
Hicken taught at Sauk Prairie High School from 1998 to 2006 before serving as the agriculture education consultant and state FFA advisor at the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. He passed away last summer after a brief illness.
