Support for veterans to begin successful farming ventures

Support for veterans to begin successful farming ventures

By Jamie Martin

Military veterans looking to enter the agriculture industry often face significant challenges, from planning and liability considerations to marketing and operations management.

In the U.S., over 289,000 farms are run by producers with military experience, covering more than 108 million acres of land. To support these veterans, the National Center for Appropriate Technology launched Armed to Farm in 2013.

Armed to Farm is a program specifically designed to provide training, resources, and networking opportunities to veterans interested in agriculture.

According to Margo Hale, the program director, Armed to Farm helps veterans build a solid foundation in sustainable farming while offering ongoing support throughout their farming journey.

The program hosts training events across the U.S., where veterans learn about farming, sustainable agriculture, and business management. These events also provide a valuable opportunity for veterans to connect with each other and other farmers.

Rusty Rumley, a senior staff attorney for the National Agricultural Law Center, frequently presents at these events, discussing key topics like business entities, landowner liability, and agricultural leasing.

Armed to Farm's impact extends well beyond the week-long workshops, with many veterans continuing to develop and improve their agricultural businesses long after the training ends. The connections made during these workshops often last a lifetime, providing ongoing support and encouragement.

For veterans interested in starting a farming business, Armed to Farm offers a unique and invaluable resource, helping them achieve their agricultural goals with confidence and community support.
