Eight governors representing Midwest states have sent a letter to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in support of the year-round sale of E15 fuel. The memo, which was co-signed by Tony Evers, will assure that Wisconsin drivers will continue to have the choice to purchase a blend with higher content of renewable biofuel, which typically goes off the market during the summer months.
E15 is often sold and marketed as 'Unleaded 88' is a mix of regular gasoline and 15-percent ethanol.
The Wisconsin BioFuels Association is applauding the news, saying E15 is a cleaner, higher octane fuel that sells at a large discount to gasoline.
"Ethanol is currently selling for around a dollar less per gallon than base gasoline, so removing the regulatory barrier will save Wisconsin families money at the pump," said WBA President Erik Huschitt. "Using more ethanol in our state's fuel supply is a huge boon to Wisconsin's rural economy. The economic impact of our industry on Wisconsin is estimated to be over $1 billion and supports almost 20,000 jobs."
The Wisconsin Corn Growers Association also released a statement of support, claiming E15 is a homegrown fuel that reduces greenhouse gas emissions and tailpipe pollution, lowers costs at the pump and increases American energy independence.
