Wisconsin farmers voice heard in Washington

Nearly 300 Farmers Union members from across the country gathered in Washington, D.C., to advocate for family farmers and a strong Farm Bill during the National Farmers Union (NFU) Fall Legislative Fly-In.

Wisconsin Farmers Union was represented by 24 members who met with congressional leaders and federal agencies to address key issues affecting the agricultural sector.

During the fly-in, Wisconsin Farmers Union members participated in meetings with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Justice, and Federal Trade Commission.

They discussed critical issues such as price transparency in cattle markets, mandatory country-of-origin labeling for beef, enforcement of the Packers and Stockyards Act, and strengthening the farm safety net.

Members emphasized the need for a new farm bill that supports family farmers, rural communities, and the future of farming. They advocated for expanded crop insurance options, permanent disaster assistance, and measures to address the ongoing loss of family dairy farms.

Additionally, they highlighted the importance of climate resilience through voluntary conservation programs and renewable energy initiatives.

"Wisconsin’s family farmers need a new farm bill this year," said Wisconsin Farmers Union President Darin Von Ruden. "The farm bill is crucial for supporting our food system, rural communities, and the future of farming. With low farm income, rising input costs, and more frequent natural disasters, Congress must seize this opportunity. Our members are making sure policymakers hear that message."

Other Wisconsin Farmers Union members who participated in the fly-in included Paul and JoAnn Adams, Camryn Billen, Selina Briske, Dylan and Skye Bruce, Linda Ceylor, Joseph Childs, Tommy Enright, Ryan Erisman, David and Meghan Greenfield, Duane and Tina Hinchley, Kendall Johnson, David Michelson, Mike Miles, Harry Pulliam, Michelle Ramirez-White, Dave Rosen, Olivia Roth, Michael Slattery, and Heather Toman.

By participating in the NFU Fall Legislative Fly-In, Wisconsin Farmers Union members played a vital role in advocating for the interests of family farmers and ensuring that their voices are heard in Washington, D.C.
