Wisconsin maple syrup royalty - the Barouns honored

By Blake Jackson

Jon and Theresa Baroun of De Pere, WI, were honored with the Wisconsin Maple Syrup Producers Association (WMSPA) Maple Producer of the Year Award and the Lynn Reynold Traveling Trophy. Recognized for their 26 years of dedicated involvement in the maple syrup industry, the couple embodies the spirit of the award criteria, being longstanding, active WMSPA members who contribute significantly to the association's growth.

The Barouns' journey in maple syrup production traces back to Maple Sweet Dairy's inception 60 years ago, initiated by Don and Ev Van Deurzen. The family tradition continued to flourish when Jon and Theresa began tapping trees together in 1996. Over the years, Maple Sweet Dairy has evolved, with a new sugarhouse and licensed kitchen in 2006, and a transition of leadership to Jon and Theresa in 2020.

Currently, Maple Sweet Dairy operates over 1,200 taps using various methods, including pails, tubing, and a solar vacuum system. While maintaining a wood-fired evaporator, the couple recently upgraded to a more efficient system. Beyond maple syrup, they produce honey and a range of value-added products, emphasizing education through open houses, field trips, and presentations at their sugarhouse.

Jon and Theresa actively contribute to the WMSPA, with Jon serving as a director and Theresa as an executive director for several years. Theresa has taken on the additional role of NAMSC Interim Executive Director. Their involvement extends to organizing events like the WMSPA's first tree tapping in 2004 and their continuous participation at the Wisconsin State Fair in the Wisconsin Maple Syrup Producer's Association Booth since 1997.

The Barouns prioritize family involvement, with son Justin aiding in production and website management, and daughter Alicia actively participating in various aspects of the business. Alicia and Justin share a passion for maple industry education, having served as WMSPA Maple Marketing Interns, promoting and educating about the Wisconsin maple industry.

The recognition of Jon and Theresa Baroun as Maple Producer of the Year celebrates their unwavering commitment to the industry, the WMSPA, and the continuation of a cherished family tradition.
