The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has officially certified three candidates who are now eligible to be elected to the Wisconsin Potato Industry Board. Nominations were received until March 31, 2023, and potato growers will have until June 15, 2023, to cast their votes and make their voices heard.
The nominated candidates represent three districts across the state, each with specific counties under their jurisdiction. In District 1, Tom Wild of Antigo has been nominated, covering a broad range of counties including Brown, Door, Marinette, Polk, St. Croix, and many others. Nicola Carey of Bancroft is the nominee for District 2, which includes Marathon, Shawano, and Waupaca counties, among others. District 3's nominee, Heidi Randall from Cambria, will oversee counties such as Dane, Grant, Jefferson, Milwaukee, Rock, and more.
Ballots will be mailed to eligible potato growers during the week of May 8, 2023. In case growers do not receive their ballots by May 15, 2023, they can request one by contacting the DATCP Market Orders staff. The voting process allows growers to choose their preferred candidate from their respective district or write in the name of another eligible producer. Completed ballots must be submitted via email or mail to the designated address at WI DATCP.
The elected producers will commence their three-year terms starting July 1, 2023. As members of the Wisconsin Potato Industry Board, their crucial responsibilities will involve managing approximately $1.7 million in assessment fees paid by Wisconsin potato growers. These funds will be utilized to support research, education, and the promotion of locally grown potatoes, ensuring the continued growth and success of the state's potato industry.
With the upcoming elections, Wisconsin's potato growers have a unique opportunity to shape the future of their industry by participating in the democratic process. Their votes will play a significant role in selecting capable leaders who will guide the industry forward, fostering innovation and sustainable practices that benefit both growers and consumers.
