Wolf predation and PFAS in focus at convention

Wolf predation and PFAS in focus at convention

Farmers and agricultural advocates will convene at an important annual event to address pressing issues affecting the farming community. The Wisconsin Farmers Union State Convention is set to take place from December 13-15 at Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells, bringing together members to discuss policy challenges and propose solutions.

“This is the time of year when our members come together to tackle key policy issues,” said Union President Darin Von Ruden . “Discussions begin months in advance at the local level and culminate in debates at the convention. Some of the hot-button topics this year are water quality, PFAS contamination, corporate seed monopolies, and wolf predation. These issues weigh heavily on Wisconsin farmers.”

Wolf predation has become a severe issue, especially in northern areas. Farmers report significant livestock losses during calving season, with some going to great lengths, such as building eight-foot fences, to protect their herds. The convention aims to find a balance between conservation efforts and protecting farmers’ livelihoods.

Another major issue on the agenda is PFAS contamination, an environmental concern affecting water and soil. “We need programs to help clean up contaminated sites and prevent future issues, with state and federal support playing a crucial role,” said Von Ruden.

“Thirty years ago, there were 8 to 15 major players in the seed industry; now we’re down to about three worldwide,” said Von Ruden. “This lack of competition ties farmers to specific seed and chemical companies, driving up costs and limiting choices. However, the union sees hope in smaller seed cooperatives started by its members, aimed at restoring diversity and local control.”

Adding urgency to the convention is the uncertainty surrounding the Farm Bill, which expired in September. Without renewal or an extension, outdated laws could disrupt the agricultural economy, leading to higher food prices for consumers.

The Wisconsin Farmers Union State Convention serves as a vital platform for addressing these challenges and finding pathways to sustainable agriculture. By uniting farmers, policymakers, and advocates, the event seeks to secure a resilient future for the agricultural sector and ensure its continued contribution to the community and economy.
