The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced the celebration of National Pollinator Week from June 17 to June 23, 2024, acknowledging the vital role of various pollinator species in agriculture. These species, including bees, insects, birds, and bats, are instrumental in the production of over 100 crops in the United States.
Tom Vilsack, the Agriculture Secretary, expressed the importance of pollinators to the ecosystem and agricultural economy, emphasizing ongoing efforts to protect these key species.
The health of pollinators is directly linked to the overall productivity and sustainability of crops critical to the nation’s food supply.
The USDA supports pollinator health through comprehensive research, habitat enhancement programs, and educational initiatives aimed at understanding and mitigating the impacts of pests, pathogens, and environmental changes.
A highlight of the week’s events is the Pollinator Expo, scheduled for June 21, 2024, on the Jaime L. Whitten lawn.
This expo will provide an educational platform for the public to learn about pollinator health, the challenges they face, and the measures being taken to ensure their survival and thriving populations.
These efforts by the USDA not only aim to enhance public understanding and involvement but also highlight the ongoing commitment to preserving and enhancing the environments that support these crucial agents of pollination.
