Winter Conference Returns for Wisconsin Cattlemen

The Wisconsin Cattlemen's Association is pleased to announce Winter Conference is back in 2023 with workshops, industry insight, and networking opportunities for producers.

The upcoming conference will be held at the DeForest Comfort Inn and Suites on Feb. 11. Registration begins at 9 a.m. followed by a series of speakers starting at 10 a.m.

Those on the agenda include:

Jordan Lamb, Wisconsin Cattlemen's Association Legal Council – leading WCA's lobbying efforts on behalf of its members, Lamb will provide an update on legislative progress at the Wisconsin Capitol as well as key topics impacting the state's cattle industry.
Dr. Jordan Thomas, Assistant Professor of the Division of Animal Sciences at the University of Missouri – Dr. Thomas will dive into the production model found in most beef cow-calf operations in the United States and show its lack of profitability. In part because of this inefficiency, the U.S. cow herd is shrinking with significant inventory reductions, even in states unaffected by drought. Attendees can expect to learn how investing in reproductive management improves the success of cow-calf operations.
Patrick Linnell, CattleFax – Cowherd liquidation the last few years is leading to tighter supplies and higher cattle prices. The CattleFax webinar will inform attendees about what to expect in 2023 and important factors that will influence prices and profitability.
Susan Quam, Executive Vice President of the Wisconsin Restaurant Association, and the Wisconsin Grocers Association – Quam will collaborate with the Wisconsin Restaurant Association to provide an insight into the businesses that sell beef products to consumers. Attendees will hear more about the role beef products play in the overall business model of both grocery stores and restaurants, along with challenges facing the industry.

Following these presentations, WCA will host its Annual Meeting with updates from the National Cattlemen's Beef Association and WCA Committee Chairs. At 3 p.m., producers who wish to stay can participate in a free Beef Quality Assurance Certification meeting with UW-Extension.
