Wisconsin crop conditions mostly good to excellent

Wisconsin farmers had 4.3 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending November 5, 2023, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Snow in some parts of the state increased crop moisture and slowed fieldwork.

This week's fieldwork included fall tillage and harvesting corn and soybeans.

Soil Moisture

Topsoil moisture condition rated 3% very short, 12% short, 73% adequate, and 12% surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 9% very short, 25% short, 62% adequate, and 4% surplus.

Corn

Ninety-eight percent of the corn crop was mature. The corn for grain harvest was 50% complete, 1 day behind last year and 2 days behind the five-year average. Moisture content of corn harvested for grain was 21%. Corn condition was 54% good to excellent, equal to last week.

Soybeans

The soybean harvest was 83% complete, 8 days behind last year and 1 day behind the average.

Winter Wheat

Ninety-seven percent of the winter wheat crop has been planted. Eighty-one percent of the winter wheat crop has emerged, 4 days behind last year but 4 days ahead of the average. Winter wheat condition was 67% good to excellent, up 2% from last week.

Fall Tillage

Fall tillage was 45% complete, 11 days behind last year and 2 days behind the average.
