Wisconsin farmers play key role in upcoming USDA crop survey

Wisconsin farmers play key role in upcoming USDA crop survey

By Blake Jackson

Wisconsin's agricultural industry is about to play a key role in shaping the national picture! The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) is reaching out to nearly 4,400 producers across the state to participate in two crucial mid-year surveys – the June Agricultural Survey and the June Area Survey.

"These surveys are vital for understanding US crop production," says Greg Bussler, Wisconsin State Statistician for NASS. "The information farmers provide helps estimate acreage and supply of major commodities for the year."

The data will be used by a wide range of stakeholders, including farmers, ranchers, government agencies, exporters, and researchers. It will inform critical decisions throughout the agricultural sector.

Producers can participate in the June Agricultural Survey online, by phone, or by mail. They'll be asked about planted and harvested acreage, including biotech crops and grain stocks. For the June Area Survey, NASS representatives will contact farm operators by phone or in person to gather information on crop acreage, grain stocks, livestock inventory, land values, and farm sales.

"NASS takes data privacy seriously," assures Bussler. "All individual information remains confidential. We publish data only in aggregate form, ensuring no single farm or producer can be identified."

While this is a busy time for farmers, their participation is crucial for the continued success of US agriculture. The collected data will be published in various USDA reports throughout the year, impacting everything from monthly crop production estimates to annual livestock reports.

Look out for the initial survey contact in the coming weeks, and thank you, Wisconsin farmers, for your vital contribution!
