An agronomist says he’s encouraged by what he’s seen in corn fields while traveling in northern Illinois and southeastern Wisconsin. Brent Tharp with Wyffel’s Hybrids tells Brownfield he was concerned about cool, wet weather after many farmers planted during a warm spell. “That corn has been sitting in the ground for a long time, over three weeks so, it’s coming and the stand is going to be solid.”
Tharp says some of the fields are emerging quicker than others, and he’s also not worried about the crops that were planted just recently. “There’s not going to be a lot of calendar-date difference in emergence time between the two, maybe four or five days. I think it’s a toss-up which planting window is going to give us a better yield. It would be too early to tell.”
