The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is set to enhance crop insurance for specialty and organic farmers beginning in the 2025 crop year.
This initiative, led by the USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA), aims to introduce more inclusive insurance options that cater specifically to the unique needs of these growers.
Marcia Bunger, the Administrator of RMA, expressed enthusiasm about increasing the accessibility of insurance for these agricultural sectors. The new options include enterprise units by organic farming practices and additional enterprise-unit eligibility for various crops.
These changes are designed to provide more tailored, effective coverage solutions for specialty and organic producers, allowing them to manage their risks more efficiently.
This announcement marks the beginning of a series of planned updates this summer, indicating a significant expansion of support for specialty crops across the country.
Among the anticipated updates are the expansion of shellfish policy coverage in the Northeast and the introduction of new insurance provisions for grape growers in the West.
These improvements are part of ongoing efforts by the RMA to better support specialty crop producers and extend their reach to a broader group of agricultural producers.
With these expansions, the USDA continues to adapt its policies to meet the evolving needs of the American farming landscape, ensuring enhanced protection and support for those cultivating specialty and organic crops.
