The Department of Energy (DOE) recently unveiled a draft strategy aimed at enhancing carbon management technologies like carbon capture and storage (CCS) and direct air capture, pivotal in the U.S.'s quest for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Currently, eighteen operational CCS facilities in the U.S. are set to multiply in the coming years, reflecting a national commitment to significant environmental goals.
The DOE strategy lays out five critical actions to foster the growth of CCS technology. These include the expansion of necessary pipelines and infrastructure to accommodate increased carbon capture output; updating regulations across various federal agencies to support this technology; and prioritizing research and deployment in key industries such as cement manufacturing, where carbon capture could have a substantial impact.
Additionally, the strategy highlights the importance of community engagement and international cooperation in climate diplomacy to further the reach and effectiveness of carbon management technologies.
By focusing on these strategic areas, the DOE aims to not only enhance current technologies but also spearhead innovation in capturing and storing carbon, ultimately contributing to a sustainable and environmentally stable future.
