Revolutionizing Grazing: A Conservation and Agri Triumph

Revolutionizing Grazing: A Conservation and Agri Triumph

Barbara Salas, a visionary grazier and conservationist, has transformed her land in Dodge County, Wisconsin into a thriving example of sustainable agriculture.

With support from the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Barbara has successfully integrated agricultural production and wildlife diversity on her 72-acre farm.

Starting with just four sheep, Barbara's grass-fed lamb operation has flourished over the past two decades. Through NRCS financial assistance, she expanded her grazing operation to accommodate 100 ewes.

The support received from EQIP allowed her to implement vital conservation practices, such as prescribed grazing, forage and biomass planting, fencing, and livestock pipeline installation.

These efforts have not only benefited local wildlife and natural resources but have also transformed her pastures into lush green landscapes.

Barbara's dedication to stewarding the land has made a significant impact. By transitioning her property to permanent grass and employing a prescribed grazing plan, she has safeguarded water quality, improved soil health, reduced erosion, enhanced plant productivity, and expanded wildlife habitat.

Her success has led her to become a mentor for other grazers, sharing her knowledge and experiences to promote sustainable practices.

Looking ahead, Barbara plans to further her conservation efforts through the NRCS Conservation Stewardship Program. She aims to establish a native prairie planting to support pollinators and combat invasive plants like wild parsnip using prescribed grazing techniques.

Despite retirement looming on the horizon, Barbara remains committed to her flock and the journey she embarked on 22 years ago.

Barbara Salas' unwavering determination and passion have made her an inspiration in the realm of sustainable grazing. Her story exemplifies the potential for agricultural practices that harmoniously coexist with nature, benefiting both the environment and local communities.
