Wisconsin Milk Production Continued to Climb in September

Total milk production in Wisconsin rose during September when compared to the same time last year--the seventh straight month of consecutive increases. According to the USDA's latest milk production report, Wisconsin farmers produced 2.60 billion pounds during the month, up 3.3 percent from last September, but lower than the 2.68 billion made in August 2021 (which had more days on the calendar).

Nationally, 17.3 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 24 major dairy states for the month. That was a slight 0.4 percent increase from 2020, but less than the previous month's 18 billion.

California continues to have the highest total production with about 3.28 billion pounds. South Dakota had the greatest percent-increase in output as that state produced 306 million pounds of milk--about 14.6 percent more from the same period last year. Eleven of the top 24 states had higher year-to-year production last month.

Meanwhile, the number of milk cows on farms in the 24 major states was 8.93 million head, 48,000 head more than September 2020, but 22,000 head less than August 2021. The average number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was 1.28 million head--about the same as last month, but 22,000 over last year. Monthly production per cow averaged 2,035 pounds, which was 30 pounds per cow more than last year's figures.
