Wisconsin ROPS program makes safety affordable

Wisconsin ROPS program makes safety affordable

By Blake Jackson

The Wisconsin ROPS Rebate Program has received a funding boost and simplified its reimbursement scheme, making rollover protective structures (ROPS) more accessible than ever for farmers. Now, regardless of the total cost, farmers will only pay $500 out-of-pocket for installation.

This program, run by the National Farm Medicine Center and supported by generous donors, has already helped install over 340 ROPS since 2013. With additional funding, the program can now address its waiting list and protect more farmers.

John Engel, a 58-year-old Oneida County farmer, recently benefitted from the program. He retrofitted his John Deere 3020 tractor, paying only $472 thanks to the 70% rebate. This finally eased his anxiety about the unprotected tractor, especially when his hired help or family used it.

"Tractor overturns are the leading cause of farm-related deaths," Engel highlighted, emphasizing the importance of ROPS. He shared a personal experience with a risky wheelie incident on an older tractor, solidifying his commitment to safety.

Engel's retrofit took place at Riesterer & Schnell in Antigo, where he appreciated the efficient and professional service. This positive experience reinforces the program's aim to make ROPS installation smooth and convenient for farmers.

Engel, while holding a Ph.D. in chemistry and working in the paper industry, always felt the pull of farming. He returned to the land over 13 years ago and now manages 600 acres with his partner. Their focus rests on row crops like oats, barley, rye, and soybeans, often sold to local livestock owners, creating a community-supported feel.

Baling straw remains Engel's favorite farm activity, and his newly protected 3020 plays a crucial role in various tasks like running the auger, pulling wagons, and raking straw.

The Wisconsin ROPS Rebate Program's new funding and simplified scheme offer greater peace of mind to farmers like Engel. By reducing financial barriers and streamlining the process, the program encourages vital safety upgrades on Wisconsin farms, protecting lives and families for generations to come.

Wisconsin tractor owners can register for the program via the hotline, 1-877-767-7748 (1-877-ROPSR4U), or the Web site, www.ropsr4u.com.
