Wisconsin Youth Honored as National Holstein DJM Finalists

Three Wisconsin Junior Holstein members have been honored during the National Holstein Convention in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, last week with the organization's most prestigious award for youth. Matthew Gunst, Hartford; Hannah Hockerman, Westfield; and Brian McCullough, Juda, were among six students from across the country to be honored as Distinguished Junior Member Finalists. Elise Bleck of Glenbeulah also competed as a semi-finalist for the award.

Contestants were judged on an entry book that includes the member's project work and involvement with activities in the Holstein industry. Only 12 members in the nation are eligible to compete in the semi-final round.

Elizabeth Gunst of Hartford and Logan Harbaugh from Marion were also named national finalists for the Young Distinguished Junior Member competition, which is for students between the ages of 9-16.

Meanwhile, the Sheboygan County Senior Dairy Bowl Team took fifth place in that event, with the Junior team from Brown County also placing fifth in their division.

And Sheboygan County's Alison Gartman was the top student in Junior Jeopardy. She also placed second nationally in the Junior Speaking contest.
