D-SNAP benefits roll out in storm-struck Louisiana

D-SNAP benefits roll out in storm-struck Louisiana

By Jamie Martin

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has initiated a vital food assistance program, the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP), for residents of eight Louisiana parishes impacted by Hurricane Francine.

Approximately 40,000 households, not typically eligible under standard SNAP rules, may now qualify for this special aid if they meet disaster-related income limits and have specific disaster-incurred expenses.

USDA Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack highlighted the commitment to support these communities, emphasizing the provision of resources necessary for recovery.

Eligible households will benefit from a one-month provision equal to the maximum for their household size, usable at SNAP-authorized stores or online retailers.

The application period for D-SNAP is set from September 25 to October 1, 2024, with local media providing further details on the application process. The state has been ensuring that all preparations, including public information and staffing, are in place for this rollout.

In addition to D-SNAP, Louisiana residents will see other forms of support such as supplemental SNAP benefits for existing beneficiaries in specific parishes and various waivers easing the pressure during recovery. These actions form part of a broader USDA effort to aid those affected by the hurricane, aiming to restore normalcy and nutritional security in the aftermath.
