State Cheese Production Falls for Second Straight Month



Wisconsin cheese factories manufactured less product during the month of April when compared to the previous year. According to the latest dairy product summary from the USDA, the state produced 282.7 million pounds of cheese during the month. That was 3.8 percent less than last year, and 5.9 percent lower than this past March (which had more days on the calendar).

Nationally, about 1.16 billion pounds of cheese was produced in the United States in April. That was a fractional 0.1 percent increase from 2021, but 4.5 percent less compared to the amount manufactured during the previous month.

Wisconsin's production of American cheese decreased as the state produced 87.9 million pounds, about 4.5 percent less than last year, and 3.7 percent below last month's production. Cheddar output also fell by 3.6 percent compared to 2021 to total 59.9 million pounds, and fell 0.5 percent from the month earlier. Italian cheese production was at 137.8 million pounds, about 2.4 percent below last year, and 7.6 percent lower for the month. And Mozzarella produced in Wisconsin totaled 89.2 million pounds--down 0.8 percent from April 2021, and 8.7 percent less than March 2022.

Dry Whey output in Wisconsin was recorded at 27.6 million pounds, which was up 4.0 percent from last year, and 3.3 percent higher compared to last month.
