Farmers Yards, a social initiative designed to support farmers, has officially launched in the United States. Originally developed by the University of Galway in Ireland, this program helps farmers, particularly older ones, maintain social connections and adapt to changes in their farming careers.
The program is now part of Pennsylvania Farm Link, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting farmers and promoting succession planning. Backed by funding from the USDA and the Northeast Extension Risk Management Education Center, the initiative’s first U.S. event took place at the 109th Pennsylvania Farm Show in January 2025, bringing together farmers to share experiences and discuss challenges.
Dr. Shane Conway, the program’s creator, emphasized the importance of keeping older farmers engaged: “Farmers aged 65 and older are now the fastest-growing demographic of the farming population globally and this initiative provides a vital social outlet for older farmers to stay actively involved in their local community in later life.”
The initiative fosters inclusion and offers farmers guidance on transitioning their farms to the next generation. Pennsylvania Farm Link Executive Director, Darlene Livingston, highlighted its impact, noting that many farmers in their 70s and 80s participated, preventing isolation and strengthening their community ties.
Farmers Yards also promotes education, providing farmers with tools for stress management, succession planning, and health support.
Future events will be held across rural communities to expand its reach and ensure more farmers benefit from this program.
