After the rush of spring planting, it's crucial not to overlook the importance of properly storing your planter. According to Brad Niensteadt, lead product specialist at Kinze Manufacturing, “For your planter to run at peak performance, efficiency, and accuracy, what you do now to properly store it is just as important, if not more important, than how you prepare for planting next spring.”
Here are the recommended steps for storing your planter:
- Indoor Storage - Store your planter inside to protect it from moisture and maintain its value.
- Clean Thoroughly - Remove all dirt from sprockets and shafts to prevent moisture-induced corrosion.
- Drive Chain Maintenance - Clean and either coat drive chains with a rust-preventative spray or submerge them in oil.
- Lubrication - Properly lubricate all parts of the planter and row units.
- Inspect and Replace - Check for worn or damaged parts and make necessary replacements.
- Hopper Management - Empty and clean all seed and chemical hoppers.
- Seed Meter Care - Remove and store all seed meters and discs following specific storage instructions.
- Prevent Rust - Grease or paint all metal parts susceptible to corrosion.
- Fertilizer System Flush - Drain and flush liquid fertilizer tanks and systems and treat with antifreeze.
- Dry Fertilizer Hoppers - Clean, disassemble, and reassemble with a rust preventative.
- PTO Pump Care - Ensure correct oil levels, replace filters, and inspect and lubricate hoses.
- Bulk Fill System Check - Clean and cap components, ensuring everything is securely fastened.
By adhering to these guidelines, you'll ensure your planter is in optimal condition when it's time to resume work, avoiding delays and maintaining efficiency.
